AAA—Iowa 2, Colorado Spring 1
At the Dish: Javier Baez (.222/.284/.426) provided all the offense with his 8th homer, a two-run blast in the third. He added a double off the wall and Arismendy Alcantara (.271/.305/.519) went 2-4. The I-Cubs only had eight hits and were 1-7 with RISP.
On the Hill: Chris Rusin (4-7 3.14 ERA) only needed 85 pitches to work his way through eight innings. He gave up a solo homer in the second, one of six hits, and didn't walk a batter. He's been pretty good the last three times outs, allowing three runs in 21 innings.....Blake Parker worked a scoreless ninth for his 12th save, tops in the Cubs minors.
AA—Tennessee 4, Jacksonville 0
Tennessee returned the favor to Jacksonville blanking the Suns one night after a 6-0 loss.
At the Dish: Jeudy Valdez (.229/.307/.376) knocked in two runs and starting pitcher Eduardo Figueroa hit his first career homer to lead the offense. Rubi Silva (.235/.288/.347) added a RBI single in the 8th. Kris Brant (.344/.452/.679) doubled and scored.
On the Hill: Five Tennessee pitchers combined to keep the Suns off the board for nine innings. Figueroa tossed 3.1 innings and P.J. Francescon earned the win, with 2.2 shutout frames. Zach Cates, Hunter Cervenka and Armando Rivero all tossed a scoreless innings. They combines for eight hits, four walks and eight strikeouts.
Smokies Notes: Corey Black is on the DL after getting hit with a liner on the wrist in his last start. He stayed in to pitch but was put on the DL as a precautionary measure and is expected to start soon as the move was retroactive......Lance Rymel was assigned to Tennessee from Boise.
High A—Daytona 10, Jupiter 7
Daytona scored seven runs in the seventh and rallied for the win over Jupiter.
At the Dish: Daniel Vogelbach (.272/.359/.416)) hit a three-run homer in the first and added a RBI in the seventh to help lead the offense. Willson Contreras (.275/.308/.349) had two doubles and knocked in two while Bijan Rademacher (.306/.411/.465) was on base three times and scored twice. Albert Almora (.251/.275/.338) was 1-4 with two runs.
On the Hill: Tayler Scott worked 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks. He fanned a session high six hitters and got eight ground ball outs....Stephan Perakslis walked three and gave up a hit as he was charged with four runs......Michael Jensen got the win, working 2.1 scoreless frames despite allowing four hits and two walks. He did allow an inherited runner to score in the seventh.
D-Cubs Notes: The Cubs have placed RHP Starling Peralta on the suspended list.
Low A—Kane County 12, Clinton 5
Kane County (41-20) clinched the first-half title in the MWL's Western Division with an offensive explosion against Clinton.
At the Dish: Jordan Hankins (.316/.382/.441) had a career night, going 5-5 with a double, run scored, and two RBI to pace the 14-hit attack. The bottom of the order—Carlos Penalver (.244/.296/.302), Shawon Dunston (.256/.296/.385) and Trey Martin (.196/.25/.252) combined for eight runs, five RBI, and five stolen bases..Penalver was 3-5 with three runs while Dunston knocked in a pair with two hits, scored three runs, and swiped three bases. Martin scored twice and knocked in three.
On the Hill: Daury Torrez battled through five innings as the young right-hander allowed four runs on nine hits. He fanned five, allowed his fifth homer, and didn't walk a hitter......Zak Hermans (2-0 3.38 ERA) worked three innings and earned his second win but got charged with a blown save as he allowed a homer tie the score in the sixth.........Michael Heesch worked a scoreless ninth.
Cougars Notes: Kane County opens a three-game series with Cedar Rapids and are scheduled to face Twins top pitching prospect Kohl Stewart on Monday night.
Venezuelan Summer League—Cubs 7, Phillies 4
Cubs (7-13) scored five times in the sixth and won for the third time in four games.
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 4, Phillies 3
Cubs improved to 5-1 with their second straight win over the Phillies.
On the Hill: Pedro Arroyo, 21, won his second start and still hasn't allowed a run in 11 innings, tossing six shutout frames. Chris Pieters gave up two runs and only got one out while Pedro Silverio pitched the last 2.2 innings for his second save.
