Johnson City Cardinals 2012 Starter of Year

Zach Petrick

Johnson City right-hander Zach Petrick topped others as our top starter on the St. Louis Cardinals' Appalachian League playoff club.

It did not take too much time to decide who would be selected as The Cardinal Nation/Scout.com Johnson City Cardinals Starting Pitcher of the Year for 2012. Most of the club's pitchers could not be considered for the reason that they did not pitch enough innings, and/or were placed onto the team late the season.

After consideration of those who had began at or near the start of the season and pitched more games than others, right-hander Zach Petrick has been chosen for the award.

Several of the pitchers who came in later in the season could have possibly taken this award had they pitched more games with Johnson City. For example, Silfredo Garcia was promoted from the Gulf Coast League. He made seven starts just like Petrick, going 4-2 with a 2.93 ERA, but his higher ERA ruled him out. Nick Gillung only started three games, but he was 2-0. So, a few of the starting pitchers did show a lot of potential.

Other starters were quickly excluded due to higher ERAs and had either no wins or more losses than wins. Juan Bautista took five losses on the season in 11 startss. Thomas Lee and Stalyn Lopez both were saddled four losses and ERAs above 4.00. Petrick seemed the obvious choice.

2012 was Petrick's first season in the minor leagues after signing in June as a non-drafted free agent from the University of Northwest Ohio. Originating from Morris, IL, he ranked at the mid-range for height and weight on the Cards, standing at a tall 6-foot-3-inches and 195 pounds. He celebrated his 23rd birthday on July 27 near the beginning of the season, making him one of the older players on the team.

Petrick pitched in a total of 13 games and went 5-0 with a 2.17 ERA. In 45.2 innings, he allowed only 33 hits, 12 runs (11 earned, two home runs) and 9 walks. Petrick struck out 50 batters on the season. As a starter, he went 3-0 with a 2.31 ERA in seven games and 35 innings.

After pitching so well in the first season of his career in the minor leagues, it could be said that there is a good possibility of Petrick performing at a high level as a starting pitcher next year. Whether he will or not, will be talked about often until then.
