Brandon Belt Sent Down, Alex Hinshaw DFA'd

Brandon Belt is back in the minors. The Giants reactivated Mark DeRosa Thursday, clearing way for the 36-year-old infielder by sending the team's top prospect back to Fresno. To make room for DeRosa on the 40-man roster the Giants also designated Alex Hinshaw for assignment. The 28-year-old lefty had spent much of the 2008 season pitching for the Giants.

The Giants are hoping Mark DeRosa can finally prove his worth. After signing a two-year, $12 million contract in 2009, the infielder has just 44 games as a Giant under his belt. DeRosa was rehabbing from stint on the 60-day DL after suffering a wrist injury in May. Between single-A San Jose and triple-A Fresno, he was hitting .306 with just two extra-base hits in 13 games.

The utility infielder is expected mainly to serve as a right-handed-hitting backup to first baseman Aubrey Huff.

The Giants sent down Brandon Belt to make way for DeRosa. After tearing it up in the minors, the 23-year-old has failed to get regular at bats with big club. Since being recalled on July 19 Belt started just five games and received 21 at-bats. Giants manager Bruce Bochy told reporters on Thursday that using Belt as a pinch hitter wasn't doing him any good.

"It's tough for a young guy. We'd like to see him get back to regular playing time," Bochy said

The Giants' top prospect will get yet more seasoning at the triple-A level, where he's hitting a massive .324/.462/.549 on the year.

To clear room for DeRosa on the 40-man roster the Giants designated Alex Hinshaw for assignment. It's a major fall from grace for the 28-year-old lefty. The California native posted a respectable 3.40 ERA out of the Giants bullpen in 2008. After struggling in nine major league appearances in 2009, he's been in the minors ever since. At double-A Richmond this year he had a 2.63 ERA and a 10.9 K/9 in 23 relief appearances.
