The Giants snapped a streak of selecting pitchers with their first round picks to tab catcher Buster Posey, who leads the NCAA in batting average, on base percentage and slugging percentage as a junior.
Posey has garnered a number of accolades for Florida State this year, including selection as a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award and the Johnny Bench Award, given to the top college catcher. He has already been named the ACC Player of the Year and the Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Year.
Posey becomes the second early selection catcher in two years for the Giants, who used a supplemental pick for Oklahoma catcher Jackson Williams last year. Williams, regarded much more highly for his defense than bat, has struggled at Augusta in his first season of professional ball.
The club last took a position player with their initial first-round pick in 1998 when they tabbed Tony Torcato out of Woodland (CA) High School. The club also made outfielders Eddy Martinez-Esteve (2004) and Ben Copeland (2005) their first selections, but both were taken after the first round.
