Minor League Notebook | June 16

As the first half winds down and playoff spots finalized, San Jose and Augusta do a bit of coasting.

Fresno Grizzlies: Colorado Springs 6, Fresno 4 (Click to see Box Score)

Lines of the day:
1B Scott McClain - 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B (12), 1 SO
RF Brian Horwitz - 1-3, 1 2B (9), 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO
SS Ivan Ochoa - 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR (3), 2 RBI, 1 SO
RP Erick Threets - 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO, 1 BK

Starter Sun-Woo Kim gave up four runs in the first inning in this one to take the loss. Although Kim only gave up one run the rest of the way, it would be enough to take the loss. The Grizzlies bounced back with a 2-run home run by Ivan Ochoa in the second, but only scratched out a couple of more runs later.

Horwitz is having a very good season at Fresno, and has hit five home runs in his last nine games. McClain bounced right back after an 0-for-4 broke a five game hit streak on Friday.

Connecticut Defenders: Altoona 8, Connecticut 7 (Click to see Box Score)

Lines of the day:
RF John Bowker - 2-4, 1 R, 2 RBI, BB, 1 SO
1B Pat Dobson - 2-5, 1 RBI, 1 SO
2B Eugenio Velez - 3-5, 2 R, 2 2B (5)
SP Garrett Broshuis - 6 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 SO, L (1-8)
RP Yosandy Ibanez - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO

Bowker continues his hot hitting, but it wasn't enough. Connecticut attempted a comeback in the 9th while down 8-2, collecting five singles to lead off the inning, but they only got a walk and one more single the rest of the way to fall just short.

Broshuis has been a tough luck loser this season, going 1-8 with a 3.04 ERA, but this was his first loss in the past three decisions. He has struck out just 5 batters in the last four starts.

San Jose Giants: Modesto 5, San Jose 1 (Click to see Box Score)

Lines of the day:
SS Brian Bocock - 1-4, 1 R, 1 SO
1B Will Thompson - 1-3, 1 2B (4), 1 SO
SP Ronnie Ray - 5 2/3 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO, 1 HR
RP Jason Waddell - 1 1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 1 HBP
RP Brian Wilson - 1 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 3 SO

The Giants lost this one thanks to one big inning. Modesto teed off on Ray in the 5th, highlighted by a 3 run home run. An error followed by a single and double led to the other two runs coming in and scoring unearned. Waddell came in to shut the Nuts down, but it was enough with the offense having a rough day.

Augusta GreenJackets: Charleston 2, Augusta 0 (Click to see Box Score)

Lines of the day:
RF Bobby Felmy - 2-4, 1 SO
1B Brett Pill - 2-4
SP Dan Griffin - 3 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 1 WP
RP Ryan Shaver - 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO

After a 7 game winning streak that won Augusta the first half title, the GreenJackets have lost two of three to Charleston. Griffin made his first start since May 9th, and did fairly well. Griffin gave up just two runs, one earned, but it was enough. The GreenJackets just managed six hits, none of which were for extra bases.
