The roster for the California League All-Star team was released, and the San Jose Giants picked up just one spot on the roster -- reserved for their star closer.

The California League All-Star roster was announced Wednesday, and as expected, the league’s leading team did not have a large presence on the team. The San Jose Giants placed just one player on the roster, pitcher Taylor Wilding, who has been one of the league’s top closers.

The California-Carolina League All-Star game will be held on June 19th at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton, Calif. The California League team will face off against the Carolina League team, which has not been named yet.

Wilding is tied for second in the league in saves with 10, and has a sparkling 0.72 ERA with 46 strikeouts and 10 walks in 37 1/3 innings. He has given up just three earned runs on the year.

San Jose is one of four teams that have just one representative on the 22-player All-Star team, along with the Bakersfield Blaze, the Modesto Nuts and the High Desert Mavericks.

The team has a high representation from the South division, as 15 players come from that half. That includes a team-high six from the Lake Elsinore Storm, and four from the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.

The Giants were hurt by injuries and player movement. Three of the team’s top performers have been recent additions that didn’t merit serious consideration for the team: pitcher Sergio Romo, shortstop Brian Bocock and first baseman Tyler Von Schell.

San Jose also probably would have had pitcher Dave McKae on the roster had he not been promoted to Connecticut in late May. Also, one of the Giants most well-rounded offensive players, Ben Copeland, has missed more than a month with injury, and had he been healthy, he might have merited consideration.
