Fresno Grizzlies: Fresno 5, Las Vegas 3 (Click to see Box Score)
Lines of the day:
LF Dan Ortmeier - 2-4, 2 2B (8), 1 SO
CF Fred Lewis - 1-3, 1 3B (4)
RF Nate Schierholtz - 1-4, 1 3B (2), 3 SO
SS Ivan Ochoa - 2-5, 2 R, 2 HR (2), 4 RBI
C Justin Knoedler - 1-3, 1 R, 1 HR (3), 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO
SP Travis Blackley - 6 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
Fresno narrowly avoided extra innings in a late-inning win. Fresno had taken an early lead off of a Knoedler solo homer and an Ochoa two-run homer in the third, but Las Vegas tied it soon after. The score stayed knotted at 3-3 until the ninth, when Ochoa hit his second two-run homer of the game.
Ochoa, a 24-year old middle infielder, hit his first two home runs of the year after missing much of April with an undisclosed injury. Schierholtz extended his hitting streak to eight games, and it was just the second single-hit game of the streak. Ortmeier has three doubles in his last three games. Blackley's solid game actually raised his ERA to 3.93.
Connecticut Defenders: Connecticut 7, New Hampshire 4 (Click to see Box Score)
Lines of the day:
RF John Bowker - 2-5, 1 2B (4), 1 3B (3), 1 SO
3B Simon Klink - 3-4, 2 R, 1 BB
C Steven Holm - 1-5, 1 R, 1 HR (2), 1 RBI, 1 SO
CF Pat Dobson - 0-5, 1 SO
SP Ben Cox - 4 1-3 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RP Brian Anderson - 1 1-3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K, W (1-1)
The Defenders blew a lead and bounced back in a matter of minutes. Leading 4-3, reliever Alex Hinshaw came in and had some problems. An error allowed a runner to reach base, then two singles scored him. Anderson came on with two out, and got a strikeout to end the inning. In the ninth, Bowker hit a one-out triple, and though he would later be thrown out at home, it led to a Carlos Sosa bases-loaded double that scored three runs.
Bowker's revival in Connecticut continues. He has raised his batting average to .323 and is slugging .545 in the cold Eastern League. Holm, meanwhile, is batting just .188 after hitting his second home run. Dobson, who has a couple of four-hit games in the past week, went back to having a bad day, though he struck out for just his third time in his last 10 games. Cox continues to be a bit snakebit, although he was quite hittable today. He doesn't have a win in five starts.
San Jose Giants: No Game Scheduled
San Jose could use the rest, as Visalia remains just two games behind them in the standings. They will be in Stockton for three games starting Tuesday, after having just taken two of three from Stockton last week.
Augusta GreenJackets: No Game Scheduled
