Minor League Notebook | April 12, 2007

One day’s minor league action was feast or famine. One team got rained out (again) while two teams played well beyond nine innings. The future of the franchise may turn a formerly feeble Fresno team around. Playing around with alliteration fills those long hours between at-bats in the 16 inning games. Forgiveness please—it’s the late edition of Just Another Day in the Minors.

Fresno Grizzlies: Fresno 2, Tacoma 0 (Click to see Box Score)

This is why the Giants drafted Tim Lincecum: the little big hope has thrown two perfect starts this season. Thursday he went seven shutout innings, allowing four hits and striking out nine batters. Save some of Lincecum's overflowing praise for the Fresno bullpen. The Grizzlies have relied on their relief pitching in their early return to respectability. Scott Munter lost his sinker, then lost his way in the majors but nailed down a hold with one solid inning where he struck out one batter and allowed a hit. Brian Wilson is finishing games while waiting for his turn to close in San Francisco. He picked up his second save of the year.

Kevin Frandsen returned to Fresno Thursday to get playing time. He hit an RBI single with the bases loaded good for the second Grizzlies run of the game.

Line of the day: Tim Lincecum - 7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 9 SO, W (2-0)

Connecticut Defenders: Game postponed due to rain

The Defenders can't escape the snow and rain. This is their fifth game to be cancelled due to weather since the season began. Connecticut could not play their home opener against Trenton Thursday. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader Saturday.

San Jose Giants: San Jose 3, Rancho Cucamonga 2, 16 innings (Click to see Box Score)

San Jose's home opener was an extended affair. The starting pitchers went toe-to-toe each allowing one run. The Giants bullpen was nothing short of outstanding. Taylor Wilding and Kelvin Pichardo combined for 6.2 innings pitched and 10 strikeouts. This game was tied twice, first by the Giants in the seventh inning then again in the thirteenth when both teams posted a run.

The Giants left 14 runners on base in the last eight innings whereas Rancho Cucamonga left two runners stranded for the entire game. San Jose blew several chances to end the game. Pablo Sandoval had a 3-0 count with the bases loaded in the 11th inning but grounded out for the final out of the frame. Barry Gunther had the game winning hit in the bottom of the 16th inning, after two Giants reached base on infield hits.

Line of the day: Ben Copeland - 3-8, 1 2B (3), 1 RBI (8), 2 SO

Augusta Greenjackets: Game 1 - Augusta 8, Savannah 2 (makeup game from April 11 - Click to see Box Score)

Game 2 - Augusta 6, Savannah 0, 7 innings (Click to see Box Score)

Rain didn't interrupt Augusta's winning ways. The Greenjackets won both games of a doubleheader--the first game to make up for Wednesday's rainout and a seven inning game following the completion of the postponed contest.

Game 1: The top of the lineup got things going early. Leadoff hitter Tyler Graham had three runs scored with two walks, and Brian Bocock batted behind him picking up three hits and two RBI. The two also stole one base each. Joey Dyche and Marcus Sanders haven't found a place in the Giants' minor league system yet but each had two hits in the first game of the doubleheader and both have posted high batting averages in the early season. Steven Calicutt started the game but pitched only one inning. Dan Griffin went five innings to get the win.

Line of the day: Brian Bocock - 3-5, 1 R, 2 RBI (6), SB (9)

Game 2: Starting pitcher Ben Snyder handled the pitching duties by throwing five shutout innings with eight strikeouts while Augusta's offense shared the scoring duties. Five different Greenjackets hitters collected RBI. Dyche had a big day with two more hits and another steal in the second game of the doubleheader. Graham stole two bases and scored two runs.

Line of the day: Ben Snyder - 5.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 8 SO, W (2-0)
