Schierholtz had the wind knocked out of him and a bruised shoulder, but stayed in the game. He was replaced by a pinch hitter an inning later.
The collision occurred in the top half of the 7th inning, as Schierholtz and Velez chased a pop fly hit by Cubs backup catcher Geovany Soto. Schierholtz was able to get to the ball, but Velez stumbled and they collided chest-to-chest. The ball dropped for a double. Schierholtz and Velez both remained on the ground for several minutes, although Schierholtz got to his feet and looked okay. Velez was helped off the field by trainers a few minutes later.Velez was named the South Atlantic League's MVP for 2006 after batting .315 with 29 doubles, 20 triples and 14 home runs, along with 64 stolen bases. He was acquired by the Giants from the Toronto Blue Jays in the minor league portion of the 2005 Rule 5 draft, and is expected to play in Double-A Connecticut this season.
