Giants sign Dave Roberts

Posted Dec 2, 2006

After re-signing Ray Durham and offering arbitration to only Jason Schmidt, the Giants made another move to fill another spot on their roster by acquiring Dave Roberts.

The Giants signed Dave Roberts to a three-year, $18 million contract on Saturday. Roberts will be reunited with Bruce Bochy, who was his manager last season in San Diego.

For Bochy last season, Roberts batted .293. He will add speed to a Giants’ lineup that hasn’t seen much speed in the past few seasons. Roberts stole 49 bases in 55 attempts in 2006.

One of the highlights of Roberts’ career is his stolen base in the 2004 ALCS for the Boston Red Sox that helped them eventually win the World Series.

Roberts will play center field for the Giants, but has agreed to shift to left field if the Giants acquire a prime center fielder.

Infielder Rich Aurilia and catch Bengie Molina will reportedly be signed on Monday.
