The Hawaii Winter Baseball League kicked off Sunday with a 4-0 victory for the Waikiki Beachboysthe team featuring prospects from the San Francisco Giants farm systemover the Honolulu Sharks.
Nate Schierholtz went 0-3 with a pair of fly outs and a hard-hit grounder to first. He made a nice running catch in the right-field corneran especially difficult play, given the gusting trade winds that will often swirl, Candlestick-esque, near the foul pole.
Brian Anderson came on to pitch a perfect ninth, striking out one.
Games resume Tuesday, when second baseman Mark Minicozzi is expected to make his debut. The season will run through the end of November, the four teams in the league playing six days a week.
