The San Francisco Giants named 4 of their top prospects to the Scottsdale Scorpions of the Arizona Fall League on Monday, while reserving 4 other spots to be named later. Second baseman Kevin Frandsen and First Baseman Travis Ishikawa, who both made their major league debuts in 2006, will play the field for the Scorpions. Meanwhile, starter Patrick Misch and reliever Erick Threets will be part of the team’s pitching staff.
The roster also indicates that the Giants will name three other pitchers to the staff and one outfielder to complete their contribution.
The Arizona Fall League consists of 6 teams, each with 5 teams contributing players. The Scorpions will include players from the Giants, the Chicago White Sox, the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the Milwaukee Brewers.
Frandsen, 24, was placed on the 15 Day Disabled List recently with a fractured jaw, but should be back before the AFL begins. Frandsen hit .304/.358/.440 in 71 games at Triple-A Fresno, and hit .235 with 3 doubles and a home run in 30 games in the majors.
Ishikawa, who turns 23 in September, has hit .232/.316/.403 in the offense stifling Double-A Eastern League, and for most of the season led the Defenders in home runs with 10 until recently. He hit .292 with 3 doubles and a triple in 12 games in the majors.
Misch, who turned 25 on the 18th of August, was 5-4 with a 2.26 ERA at Double-A Connecticut before receiving a mid-season promotion to Fresno. In his 2nd try at the hitter-friendly PCL, Misch has a 4.29 ERA and a 2-1 record with 37 strikeouts and 9 walks in 42 innings.
Threets, 24, has been a hot prospect for many years thanks to a reputed triple-digit velocity, but has been sidetracked by multiple injuries and control issues. He has a 3.00 in Fresno’s bullpen, with 48 strikeouts and 40 walks in 60 innings. Threets is out of options after this season, and will have to clear waivers to return to the minors if he does not make the major league team next year.
