Position Battle Update - 3/15

Position Battle Update - 3/15

Playing time is starting to dry up as starters return and play longer outings, so those guys battling for spots need to step it up! And this past Sunday was a round of 'reassignments' to minor league camp! How did the position battle landscape change due to that?

Position: 5th Starter

Contenders:
Brad Hennessey: DNP
Kevin Correia: DNP
Jamey Wright: 3.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 SO

Did Good: Wright's three scoreless innings left a great impression on the coaching staff after Morris' 5 inning outing, the longest of the spring for any Giant so far, but...

Did Not So Good: Wright did allow 3 hits and 2 walks, and wasn't exactly dominant. Of course, it's still better than the other contenders, who didn't play in the past three days.

Position: Back-Up Catcher

Contenders:
Todd Greene: 1-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 SO
Justin Knoedler: 0-2, 2 SO
Eliezer Alfonzo: 0-2

Did Good: Greene did the best by the virtue of getting the only hit in the past three days. That it was a home run is just gravy.

Did Not So Good: Knoedler's 2 strikeouts on Monday magnifies his performance over Alfonzo's 0 for 2. With Matheny back and playing, catching time is going to become rarer, so bad outings will be that much more worse.

Position: Bullpen

Contenders:
Jack Taschner: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 SO
Scott Munter: DNP
Jeremy Accardo: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO
Tyler Walker: DNP
Matt Anderson: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO
Michael Tejera: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 SO
Brian Wilson: DNP

Did Good: Taschner's save on Tuesdays game with three strikeouts shows an important improvement over his earlier spring outings.

Did Not So Good: No one who played did badly, but with the starters taking longer outings, the importance of each outing is getting magnified.

Eliminated: Brian Wilson was one of 14 players who got reassigned on Sunday, but was the only real contender for a roster spot. His spring was short, and didn't allow any runs in 3 innings, but his 3 hits and 3 walks against 2 strikeouts testifies that he does have some work to do in the minors this year.

Position: 25th Man
Contenders:
Bullpen pitchers (See Above)
Todd Linden: 0-8, 1 R, 1 BB
Jason Ellison: 4-7, 1 R
Kevin Frandsen: 2-7, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SO
Angel Chavez: 2-6, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 SO

Did Good: In a week with a lot of playing time for everyone, Ellison's 4 for 7 was the best line, but Chavez continues to hit well and leads the Cactus league with 5 doubles.

Did Not So Good: Linden's 0fer hurts a lot. But, he drew a walk and didn't strikeout, so that's something.
