Position Battle Update: 3/4

Posted Mar 5, 2006

Todd Linden’s off to a hot start, but Matt Anderson’s first appearance didn’t help his chances of making the roster. Take a look at how the position battles are shaping up after the first three games of the Spring.

Position: 5th Starter

Contenders:
Brad Hennessey: 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO
Kevin Correia: Did Not Play
Jamey Wright: Did Not Play

Did Good: Hennessey had a good first outing, pitching the scoreless heart of the
Giants first spring game.

Did Not So Good: No one.  Correia and Wright will be pitching on Sunday.

Position: Back-Up Catcher

Contenders:
Todd Greene: 0-3, 1 SO
Justin Knoedler: 2-2, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 HR, 1 BB
Eliezer Alfonzo: 1-1

Did Good: Justin Knoedler’s game was clearly the class of this group.

Did Not So Good: There wasn’t much opportunity in the early games

Position: Bullpen

Contenders:
Jack Taschner: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO
Scott Munter: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO
Jeremy Accardo: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO
Tyler Walker: 0.2 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO
Matt Anderson: 1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO
Michael Tejera: Did Not Play
Brian Wilson: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO
Joe Bateman: Did Not Play

Did Good: Nothing outstanding.  Taschner, Munter and Accardo all had solid outings, but nothing ground-shaking.  Since they are the incumbents, though, their performances resonated more than Brian Wilson’s similar outing.

Did Not So Good: Matt Anderson’s 2 runs allowed suddenly put him far behind in a crowded bullpen, but Tyler Walker couldn’t even complete an inning and his control was awful.

Eliminated: Joe Bateman was sent to minor league camp before games even began.  Maybe the sidearmer didn’t impress enough in the ‘Giants Idol’ competition.

Position: 5th Starter
Contenders:
Bullpen pitchers (See Above)
Todd Linden: 5-8, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 1 SB
Jason Ellison: 3-8, 1 2B, 1 SO, 1 SB, 1 CS
Kevin Frandsen: 0-8, 1 R, 1 HBP
Angel Chavez: 0-6, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1 S

Did Good: Linden had five hits in each of his first at bats, and even drew a walk.  His major 2005 issue, strikeouts, have yet to be seen.  However…

Did Not So Good: Linden’s defense left a little to be desired, with a fly lost in the sun and an error in his first game.  However, Frandsen and Chavez had the most disappointing outings.
