Randy Winn was a surprise acquisition at the trading deadline in July of 2005, and he sparked the Giants to make a run to the playoffs late in the year. Fueled by that, the Giants locked Winn up for years to come.

The San Francisco Giants have signed outfielder Randy Winn to a 3 year contract extension on Tuesday, keeping him on the team through 2009 for $23.25 million.  The Giants had already taken Winn’s $5 million club option for the 2006 season.

"The opportunity was great, the timing wonderful," General Manager Brian Sabean said in a press conference announcing the signing. "There are certainly more sides to him than the average player," said the GM. "The fact [that] he plays center, switch-hits, leads off and [has] a run-producing dimension is a rarity."

Winn, 31,  batted .359/.391/.680 in 58 games with the Giants after being acquired in trade for Jesse Foppert and Yorvit Torrealba, sparking the Giants to a late playoff push into the last week of the season.  He hit for the cycle on August 15th, the first Giant to do so in 6 years since Jeff Kent did it, and hit 14 home runs in his two months with the Giants, which matched his previous career high for a full season.

For his career, Winn has hit .288/.346/.425 over 8 years with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Seattle Mariners and the Giants.  He has earned a reputation of being durable by playing over 150 games in each of the last four seasons.

The extension for Winn makes Winn the Giant with the longest current contract.  The Giants were looking at two years of major turnover, with the entire outfield and two infield starter contracts up after the 2006 season before this extension, and every Giant veteran except for Matt Morris had their current contracts set to expire by the end of the 2007 season.

Manager Felipe Alou feels it’s perfect timing.  “He might be entering the peak of his career right now. The extension is well deserved.”

Winn, a bay area native who grew up in Danville, couldn’t be happier to have finally found the Giants as a home in his career. "Growing up as a kid, you always dream of what might be, if you make it to the big leagues what team you'd like to play for," said Winn. "Now, to come back home and play for an outstanding organization, we have a good chance to at least win the division."

Winn will not spend most of Spring Training with the Giants, instead playing for the U.S. World Baseball Classic team.  The U.S. team will play the Giants in an exhibition on Sunday, March 5th in Scottsdale, Arizona.
