Lon Simmons was honored by being the 2004 recipient of the Ford C.
Frick
Award for broadcasting excellence. Simmons has been an active voice on
the
radio throughout the Bay Area, calling games for not only the San Francisco Giants in 1958-1973, 1976-1978, and 1996-2000, but also for the Oakland
A’s
for 15 years, and the San Francisco 49ers from 1957-1980 and 1987-1988.
The other finalists were Ken Coleman, Jack Graney, Graham McNamee, Joe
Nuxhall, Hal Totten, Fene Elston, France Laux, Dave Niehaus, and Ty
Tyson.
With this award, Simmons joins other Giant greats in the Hall of Fame
such
as Willie Mays, Orlando Cepeda, and Juan Marichal.
Players, broadcasters, and fans alike give Simmons a huge amount of
respect,
and they displayed it by backing him in votes for this award. However,
Simmons remain humble, and says he considers himself to be lucky, not a
superstar.
