Linden congratulated after three-run homer

It’s the last game in southern California this season, but the Giants weren’t changing their plans. They put out their “B” lineup with a rookie pitcher against the Dodgers’ starting eight and struggling lefty as the Dodgers tried to salvage something against the Giants in this series.

Rookie Kevin Correia made one more start this season, pitching the series closer in Los Angeles. The Dodgers countered with Kazuhisa Ishii, who has not won a game for Los Angeles in about two months since coming off the DL.

Shawn Green greeted Correia in the first inning with a two run jack after Dave Roberts beat out a bunt single and Paul Lo Duca hit into a fielder’s choice.

Jeffrey Hammonds led off the second inning with a single into right field and took second base on a wild pitch. Ishii then walked Neifi Perez, which brought rookie Todd Linden to the plate. Linden cracked his first major league roundtripper to put the Giants ahead, 3-2.

In the fourth inning, Yorvit Torrealba tripled past the diving Green, where Correia helped his own cause with his first major league hit and first major league RBI by blooping one into right field. Young was walked, and Ishii was booed off the field by Dodger fans to make room for Rodney Myers. Myers promptly walked the first batter he faced, Jose Cruz, Jr.

With the bases loaded, Pedro Feliz hit a slow tapper for a ground out, but on the out all the runners advanced and Feliz collected his 41st RBI of the season. Andres Galarraga hit a grounder to first where Robin Ventura threw Young out at the plate, and it brought the hot hitting Hammonds to the plate. Hammonds struck out to end the inning.

The Dodgers got one of those runs back as Robin Ventura jacked a homer to straight away center. Adrian Beltre followed with a wake up call to Correia as he belted another roundtripper against the Giants, bringing the Dodgers within only one run. Jeromy Burnitz wanted a piece of the action as well, and he also went deep, giving the Dodgers back-to-back- to-back homeruns with no outs, and tying the game at five.

In the fifth, Jim Brower relieved Correia and pitched two scoreless innings. Paul Quantrill relieved Myers in the seventh and pitched a scoreless inning.

In the seventh, Brower gave up an RBI triple to Dave Roberts for the Dodgers’ go ahead run.

Paul Shuy pitched two-thirds of an inning for Los Angeles in the eighth and closer, Eric Gagne, finished the inning. Lefty Chad Zerbe came in relief of Brower in the eighth to face the heart of the Dodgers’ order.

Green tripled on a ball that was misjudged by Linden in left field, and with Beltre intentionally walked and one out, Burnitz drove a ball to deep centerfield that enabled Green to tag and score.

Gagne finished the game for the Dodgers as he gathered an unbelievable number of 53 consecutive saves.

SFDugout.com’s Players of the Game: Todd Linden sparked the Giants with his first major league jack, Kevin Correia had an RBI single, and Tony Torcato got a pinch hit single, which gave the rookies a good day offensively. Despite getting the loss, Brower was solid in long relief coming out of the bullpen.
