In the top of the 1st, Luis Castillo led off the game with a single for his
Florida Marlins. Luckily for Dustin Hermanson and the Giants, he was caught
trying to steal second. But Juan Pierre, the next batter, belted a double to
deep left-center, and made it to third on a throwing error by Giants left
fielder Todd Linden. Mike Lowell grounded out to drive Pierre, giving the
Marlins an early 1-0 edge.
In the bottom of the 3rd, the last part of the Giants lineup took action.
Jeffrey Hammonds lead off with a solo blast to tie the game up, and Yorvit
Torrealba hit a single. Hermanson sacrificed Torrealba over to second, and
another single by Eric Young drove in Torrealba, giving the Giants a 2-1
A one-out solo shot by Juan Encarnacion in the top of the 4th tied it up at
Neither team scored until the bottom of the 8th, when Torrealba led off
with a single. Two outs later, he stole his first base of the season. Neifi
Perez drove him in with a double.
The Giants won the game by a final score of 3-2, making it their 5th
SFDugout.com’s Player of the Game: Yorvit Torrealba. Not known for speed, he stole his first base of the year
at a very important point in the game. He also scored 2 of the Giants 3
runs. If it wasn’t for him, they would have lost! Jim Brower gets an
honorable mention. The Giants owe him so much. They don’t have the best
starters, especially not recently, and since Brower is able to go about 2-3
innings, he really saves the rest of the relief staff from working much at
