Ponson gets his first win as a Giant

Posted Aug 23, 2003

Coming off a sweep against the team with the best record in baseball, the Giants were thrown up against the young phenom from Alameda, Dontrelle Willis. Sidney Ponson, looking for his first win as a Giant, faced the young rookie and the rest of the Florida Marlins in game one of this three game series.

Perhaps Willis was trying too hard to impress his family and friends. After Ponson threw a fairly easy top of the first, the rookie struggled to get the first two outs, needing 16 pitches to get two outs. Then, on the 21st pitch of the inning, Marquis Grissom homered to left field to give the Giants a quick 1-0 lead.

With Ponson dealing, it looked like it was going to be enough. Not without a little bit of help from Edgardo Alfonzo though – Alfonzo made several headlong dives to rob several Marlins of extra bases. In the first six innings of the game, seven balls were hit toward Alfonzo, including a double play grounder hit by Ivan Rodriguez in the fifth.

Ponson allowed only two runs in six innings – both coming from an Alex Gonzalez homer in the fifth – to finally earn his first victory as a Giant.

However, for a short time, the Marlins had obtained the lead. Willis, however, continued to throw many pitches and every out required much effort. Finally, in the bottom of the sixth, the Giants broke out for 5 runs. Grissom, who homered earlier, singled on the first pitch of the inning off the leg of the pitcher. After Willis insisted he was okay, he gave up a single to Bonds. Alfonzo followed that up with yet another single to score Grissom from second.

Alfonzo’s single ended the night for Willis. He was pulled in favor of Chad Fox.

Benito Santiago then walked to load the bases, and Andres Galarraga sent Bonds home on a single. Then with the bases loaded, Jose Cruz, Jr. walked to drive Alfonzo in. Ponson was lifted for a pinch hitter, Neifi Perez. Perez, however, struck out swinging at a slider in the dirt. With one out and the bases still loaded, Eric Young drove in his first RBI as a Giant when he hit a fly ball deep enough for a sacrifice fly. Aurilia then blooped a double in just out of the reach of shortstop Alex Gonzalez to score Galaragga for the final run of the inning.

That would be all the scoring done by the Giants, but it would be enough. The bullpen went three innings, allowing two runs, one unearned. Tim Worrell came in the ninth and got the last two outs to earn his 26th save.

SFDugout.com’s Player of the Game: Yay for Ponson! He finally got his first win as a Giant. He pitched six strong innings, this time finally getting the run support he needed. Marquis Grissom also gets a mention for his strong offensive night tonight – 2-4 with a homer.
