WP D. Hermanson (2-2) 6IP 4H 2R 2ER 2BB 4K 1HR 5.05 ERA
LP J. Haynes (2-12) 2 2/3IP 5H 6R 6ER 3BB 3K 0HR 6.30 ERA
The Giants summoned yet another emergency pitcher to start in today’s
game. Dustin Hermanson was called up from Fresno to face Jimmy Haynes
of the Reds.
The Giants began their big inning in the third. Edgardo Alfonzo singled
and Hermanson bunted him over to second. With two outs, Jeffrey
Hammonds singled. Rich Aurilia drew a walk, and with the bases loaded,
Marquis Grissom was at the plate. Grissom singled to drive in Alfonzo,
giving the Giants a 1-0 lead. Barry Bonds collected RBIs 70 and 71 of
the season with a line drive to right field. Andres Galarraga walked
and Benito Santiago singled to knock in Grissom for the fourth run for
the Giants, and to knock Haynes out of the game. Alfonzo came up again
in the same inning with a double to the left field corner to drive in
Bonds and Galarraga. Neifi Perez was walked intentionally to face
Hermanson, and the strategy worked as the Giants were finally retired
to end the inning after scoring six runs.
In the bottom of the fifth, D’Angelo Jimenez singled Juan Castro home
from second base for the Reds’ first run of the game. A solo shot from
Jason LaRue in the sixth gave the Reds another run.
The Giants added to their lead in the seventh as Santiago hit a fly
ball that was misjudged by Wily Mo Pena for a double. Perez singled to
give the Giants their seventh run of the game.
Joe Nathan pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth. Tim Worrell came
into the game in the ninth and gave up three singles in a row to Pena,
Ruben Mateo, and Castro to give the Reds another run. With runners on
second and third and two outs, the Reds were hoping for another late
inning heroic, but that didn’t happen as a ground out to Galarraga at
first ended the game.
Game Notes: Dustin Hermanson became the Giants’ eleventh starting
pitcher this season. All six runs in the third inning scored by the
Giants came with two outs. The Giants had an eleven game lead in the NL
West in the beginning of the road trip, and after losing four out of six
on this trip, they go home with a twelve game lead.
SFDugout.com’s Player of the Game: In his debut as a Giant, Dustin Hermanson did not
even have a name on his #32 jersey as he arrived in Cincinnati this
morning, and despite the long plane ride and spending all this time in
the minors after being shoved around by different teams, he showed that
he is still able to handle the big leagues, giving up only two runs and
four hits to the Reds, and becoming the unsung hero and stopper for the
Giants on this road trip. Edgardo Alfonzo helped Hermanson out by
continuing his second half tear with three hits, two, including a
double, in the big third inning for the Giants.
