Both teams went down in order in the first inning, but the Padres did
something much different in the bottom of the second. It started with a Sean
Burroughs single up the middle, and then Gary Matthews Jr. beat by a very
thin margin to get an infield hit. Brian Buchanan hit a line-drive single to
left, but no one scored, so the bases were loaded with no one out. Miguel
Ojeda stood at the plate. However, Jason Schmidt got almost the ideal ending.
Ojeda hit a grounder to third. Edgardo Alfonzo stepped on the bag and threw over to
first. Two down. Burroughs in, making the score 1-0.
With one out in the top of the fourth, Marquis Grissom blasted a double to
deep right. The Padres intentionally walked Bonds to give themselves the
chance for an inning-ending double play. With two outs, Rich Aurilia doubled
to right-center to drive both Grissom and Bonds in and to give the Giants a
2-1 lead.
The Padres replied quickly in the bottom of the fourth, Burroughs walked
with one out, and Matthews Jr grounded out to move him up a base. Buchanan
got his second hit, a triple, to drive in Burroughs and tie the game at 2.
The game remained quiet until the bottom of the sixth, when Mark Loretta
lead off with a single. Schmidt was able to get out the next two batters,
but he walked Sean Burroughs. Consecutive singles by Buchanan and Ojeda gave
the Padres a 4-2 lead.
Jason Christiansen took over the Giants ship for the 8th inning, and with
two outs, Ojeda hit a blast to give the Padres a 5-2 lead.
The Giants had a chance to tie in the top of the ninth. With two runners on
and one out, Bonds was up. However, he struck out and Jose Cruz Jr. grounded
out to first to end the game.
SFDugout.com’s Player of the Game: Rich Aurilia. He drove in both of the Giants runs with a nice double.
Perhaps that is a sign that he is heating up and becoming the man we
remember from 2001.
