--RHP Tim Lincecum will make $18 million this year as part of his two-year, $40.5 million contract, but it won't be the highest salary on the team. That'll be LHP Barry Zito's $19 million. Lincecum did set a record with the biggest one-year salary for a pitcher not eligible for free agency. The previous mark was Cole Hamels' $15 million.
--RHP reliever Sergio Romo was signed to a $1.575 million contract, avoiding arbitration. He had asked for $1.75 million, and the club offered $1.3 million. He had a 1.50 ERA and 0.7 WHIP in 65 outings. The Giants opened the offseason with 13 arbitration-eligible players, and Romo was the second-to-last to come to terms. The final guy was RHP Tim Lincecum.
--Steve Decker, who has been groomed as a future big-league manager, no longer is the Class AAA Fresno manager. He and Bob Mariano switched jobs, so Decker is the new coordinator of minor-league hitting instruction. The Giants don't see it as a promotion as much as an opportunity for Decker to be more well-rounded, which the team considers a plus for the organization.
--Minor-league pitching coach Steve Kline was promoted from Class A Augusta to Class A San Jose. Kline, who pitched for the Giants in 2006 and 2007, replaced Brian Cooper. Mike Caldwell replaced Kline at Augusta, up from the Arizona League.
BY THE NUMBERS: $52 million -- amount allocated for three starting pitchers in 2012, including LHP Barry Zito ($19 million), RHP Tim Lincecum ($18 million) and RHP Matt Cain ($15 million).
QUOTE TO NOTE: "I don't want to get out of this game having a year like I did last year. I want to go out this year and do the best I can," -- 1B Aubrey Huff, who followed a solid 2010 with a sorry 2011. Now he's entering the second year of his two-year, $22 million contract.
