The Giants are facing plenty of upcoming negotiations. More than a half-dozen arbitration-eligible players are on the roster -- including staff ace Tim Lincecum and leading hitter Pablo Sandoval.

--RHP Tim Lincecum is among seven remaining arbitration-eligible players on the Giants. The others are 3B Pablo Sandoval, OFs Melky Cabrera, Angel Pagan and Nate Schierholtz and RHPs Sergio Romo and Santiago Casilla. Two years ago, Lincecum was moments away from his arbitration hearing when he and the team came to a two-year agreement. He said he's looking for a one-year deal but is open again to two years.

--C Buster Posey has accelerated his running program as he prepares for spring training and a return from a violent home-plate collision that prompted two lower-leg surgeries. Posey is penciled in as the Giants' catcher and part-time first baseman, the latter role available to him so he could rest his ankle. In early January, Posey resumed his throwing and hitting but waited a little while to return to running.

--RHP Matt Cain is due $15 million in 2012 and is eligible for free agency after the season. Management is hoping to sign Cain to a long-term contract but first is tied up in talks with seven arbitration-eligible players. It's possible negotiations wouldn't accelerate until spring training. The biggest contract for a free-agent pitcher this offseason was $77.5 million for C.J. Wilson, who reportedly turned down a more lucrative deal from the Marlins.

--1B Brandon Belt's number was retired by his alma mater, Hudson High School in Texas. His number: 12, the first retired in school history. "Every time Brandon comes back to Hudson, he always asks what he can do for us," Hudson coach Glen Kimble told the Lufkin News. "He never wants anything in return. He just asks what we need and how he can help." Belt was the Giants' opening day first baseman last year but has nothing promised to him in 2012.

--Alvin Dark celebrated his 90th birthday with family in friends at his home in Easley, S.C. Dark played in two World Series with the New York Giants and managed the Giants' first World Series in San Francisco, in 1962. "I honestly feel as good now as I did 50 years ago," he said. This is the 50-year anniversary of the '62 World Series season that ended when Willie McCovey's liner was caught in Game 7 with runners at second and third. The Giants fell 1-0 to the Yankees.

BY THE NUMBERS: 2,412 -- Days without a win for Ryan Vogelsong before he beat the Pirates last April 28. It was the start of a memorable comeback year for Vogelsong, who was rewarded with a two-year, $8.3 million contract.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Maybe over time but not immediately. We continue to look at non-roster invites and six-year (minor-league) free agents, and the secondary market will develop after the first of the year," -- GM Brian Sabean when asked in December whether he'd add players to the roster.
