Rent-a-player: Beltran won't be a Giant in 2012.
Rent-a-player: Beltran won't be a Giant in 2012.

OFs Carlos Beltran and Cody Ross, both free agents, will not return to the Giants.

Beltran was acquired from the Mets in July for top pitching prospect Zack Wheeler, and Ross was legendary in the 2010 postseason but struggled in 2011 with injuries and ineffectiveness. The Giants and Beltran and Ross were apart on both contract length and dollars. "Simply put, with Ross, we could never get on the same page," GM Brian Sabean said, "and Beltran, we knew it was going to be a stretch." Ross will be remembered for his clutch hitting in the postseason and winning the NLCS MVP award. "San Francisco will always be a home to me," he said, "because of the love and support the fans gave to us through the incredible run in 2010. We caught lightning in a bottle and enjoyed every second of it."

--RHP Guillermo Mota was close to re-signing as a free agent to provide right-handed relief depth alongside Sergio Romo and Santiago Casilla. Mota had a 3.81 ERA in 52 outings and was to receive a major league contract. He entered spring training in 2011 as a non-roster invitee and stuck with the club.

--OF Andres Torres, traded with RHP Ramon Ramirez to the Mets for OF Angel Pagan, will be remembered as a key Giant in the team's road to the 2010 championship. Struggles in 2011, including with his health, were factors for his dismissal. Plus, he was arbitration eligible, and the Giants didn't want to pay him more than the $2.2 million he made last season when he probably was going to be a backup in 2012. "It's a great opportunity," Torres said. "I understand how the game works. I'll never forget San Francisco and all those beautiful moments. I want to thank the fans for their support and the Giants for giving me an opportunity. I spent a lot of years playing in the minors, and they saw something in me."

--OF Angel Pagan, the newest Giant, hit .262 with a .322 on-base percentage, seven homers, 56 RBI and 32 steals in 123 games with the Mets. Defensively, he made 10 errors in center. He called them "hustle errors" and vowed to remain aggressive as a Giant. Pagan was acquired from the Mets, with whom he mostly batted fifth. As a Giant, it's a good bet he'll lead off.

--2B Freddy Sanchez began his throwing program four months after his shoulder surgery, and Dave Groeschner said Sanchez should be available before the season opener, which was the original timetable.

BY THE NUMBERS: 9 -- Players from the Giants' 2010 World Series roster who are no longer with the team. Among the players on the list are Andres Torres, Juan Uribe, Edgar Renteria, Travis Ishikawa, Aaron Rowand and Pat Burrell.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Congratulations, Ron Santo. We'll toast him tonight. ... I'm very disappointed it didn't happen in his lifetime so he could enjoy it." -- Giants broadcaster and ex-Cub Mike Krukow on Ron Santo, who was elected to the Hall of Fame one year after his death.
