2011 Recap: Giants Roster Report

Posted Oct 23, 2011

The Giants took a huge step backward from their World Series title. Old age and hitting deficiencies caught up with them, and their anemic offense wasted a bunch of pitching gems. The goal is to rebuild the offense so all that solid work from the rotation and bullpen isn't wasted again.

BIGGEST NEEDS: Hitters, hitters and more hitters. And better health. The Giants need a leadoff man, a corner outfielder with power and a young, athletic shortstop.

FREE AGENTS: RF Carlos Beltran, OF Cody Ross, INF/OF Mark DeRosa, LHP Javier Lopez, LF Pat Burrell, SS Orlando Cabrera, RHP Guillermo Mota.

It would be surprising if most of the seven return. Burrell could be retiring. DeRosa and Cabrera have nearly zero chance of returning. The only way Ross returns is by taking a huge cut from his $6.3 million salary. Beltran could price himself out of town. It would be no surprise if Lopez and Mota return.

ARBITRATION-ELIGIBLE: 3B Pablo Sandoval, CF Andres Torres, RF Nate Schierholtz, 2B Jeff Keppinger, C Eli Whiteside, INF Mike Fontenot, INF Emmanuel Burriss, RHP Ryan Vogelsong, LHP Jonathan Sanchez, RHP Sergio Romo, RHP Ramon Ramirez, RHP Santiago Casilla.

Lincecum will get a raise above the $13 million he made in 2011, and Sandoval will get a big bump because he's entering the arbitration process for the first time. Romo and Schierholtz are arbitration first-timers, too. Vogelsong probably deserves his first multiyear contract. Torres could return if the Giants don't find another center fielder. Jonathan Sanchez is iffy after making $4.8 million in 2011. Keppinger is insurance for Freddy Sanchez, who missed most of the season with a shoulder injury.

IN LIMBO: LHP Barry Zito, LHP Jeremy Affeldt.

Zito, anyone? Didn't think so. In August, the Giants bought out the remaining $14 million on OF Aaron Rowand's contract. Will they eat the final two years of Zito's $126 million contract? If he sticks, he'll be no better than a candidate for the No. 5 rotation spot.

Affeldt would be added to the free agent list if the Giants don't exercise his $5 million option. His season ended in early September when he needed surgery after stabbing his right hand while trying to separate frozen hamburger patties.

MEDICAL WATCH:

--C Buster Posey (fractured left leg, torn left ankle ligaments) will resume rehab throughout the winter while expecting to be the Opening Day catcher in 2012.

--2B Freddy Sanchez (right shoulder surgery in August 2011) expects to be healed in time for spring training.
