With a five game losing streak, the Giants were looking for their veteran starter Kirk Rueter to provide them with a solid outing to get them back on track. The Mets had a two game losing streak going into tonight as well. This game was the night of a lunar eclipse.

Things did not look very good at first, when Kirk Rueter struck leadoff hitter Roberto Alomar with a pitch. Raul Gonzalez grounded out to move Alomar to 2nd, and Mike Piazza walked. Cliff Floyd flied out to deep right to move Roberto Alomar to third, and consecutive singles by Ty Wigginton and Tony Clark gave the Mets a 2-0 lead.

With one out in the bottom of the 1st, Rich Aurilla was jammed but muscled out a single to center. Barry Bonds lined one to right that dropped in for a hit and Aurilla moved to third. Benito Santiago hit a ground ball into left field for a base hit, scoring Aurilia. Alfonzo lined one for a single to left in his first at-bat against the Mets since he left the team, but the Giants were unable to take advantage of this bases-loaded, one-out situation.

In the bottom of the third, Bonds hit his 11th homerun of the season to center to tie the game.

The Giants had a couple of lucky breaks in the 4th. To begin the inning, Andres "The Big Cat" Galarraga hit a pop-up that the Mets couldn't decide what to do with and it ended up dropping about 15 feet in front of home plate for an infield hit. Jose Cruz Jr. hit a single with the hit and run play on, putting runners on first and third. With one out, Kirk Rueter hit a comebacker to Mets pitcher Al Leiter. However, Leiter only got Cruz at 2nd, and should have been able to get an inning-ending double play. Instead, Leiter tried to check back Galaraga, one of the slowest runners in the league. This mistake allowed Marquis Grissom to hit a ground-rule double to drive in Galaraga. Aurilla singled to left, sending in Rueter and Grissom.

The Mets answered with a Gonzalez walk and a Piazza double off the wall to shrink the Giants lead to 5-3.

Alfonzo got his second hit of the game with one out in the bottom of the 5th. Galarraga hit a double down the left-field line but Alfonzo stopped at 3rd. The Mets made a wise move, walking the Giants RBI man, Cruz, to allow for the possiblity of a double play and pitch to the less dangerous Neifi Perez. The "non-dangerous" Perez lined a single to center, driving in Alfonzo and Galarraga. Pitcher Kirk Rueter sacrificed to move the runners up. Leadoff hitter Grissom did something out of character for his position in the lineup. He hit a three-run homer to give the Giants an amazing 10-3 lead. The Giants weren't even done yet. Leiter was relieved by Jamie Cerda. Aurilla walked, and Bonds and Santiago hit consecutive singles to make the score 11-3.

And that was how it stayed for the rest of the game. Rueter had one of his longest starts of the year, pitching 7 innings. Ryan Jensen pitched two innings in relief, giving up just one hit.

SFDugout.com Player of the Game: Marquis Grissom is the player of the game. He went three for five with a double and a home run, driving in four runs and scoring two. Honorable mentions go to Andres Galaraga. He helped start some rallies and also went 3 for 5 with a double. A sarcastic player of the game award must go to Mets starter Al Leiter. His mistake in trying to check Galaraga back to third helped the Giants get three runs.
