We're Going Streaking

The Giants now find themselves within striking distance in both the Wild Card and the NL West. Moving 5 games back of the Diamondbacks makes their matchup this weekend in the desert relevant again. With Pablo and Beltran both swinging the bat well, this is the first time all year that the team's power bats have been healthy and productive at the same time.

It is amazing what an eight-game win streak can do for a team's confidence. The Giants have positioned themselves to make one last playoff push and they have two teams in their sights. Both the Atlanta Braves and the Arizona Diamondbacks hold playoff spots, but the Giants are coming up fast.

With the Giants lurking 5 games back in the West and 4 games out of the Wild Card, the easiest path may actually be to steal the division from the Diamondbacks. It all comes down to next weekend in Arizona, and the Giants pretty much need a sweep to keep their playoff chances alive.

The Wild Card is a little farther away, with the Cardinals wedged between the Giants and the Wild Card-leading Braves. What the Giants do have in their favor is that all of their final opponents come out of the NL West. The Giants are going to need help from the Phillies, who have five games remaining against the Cards and Braves combined.

What it comes down to is the ability of Giants bats to stay hot: scoring 8+ runs in 5 of the last 8 games is something that hasn't been seen by the Giants in a long time. With that kind of run support the Giants pitching staff will just need to maintain what they've done throughout the year. With a little luck, the wins should keep on coming.

What the Giants have done in their last 8 games has been remarkable. The team has given hope to what seemed like a lost season just over a week ago. But the Giants will have to maintain their hot bats if they want to turn that glimmer of hope into a full-fledged miracle.
