The Walking Wounded Mosey Into Houston

The Walking Wounded Mosey Into Houston

If there was any time to be alright about the recent run of injuries the Giants have suffered, it would be against the Houston Astros. The Astros traded away their best two players in Hunter Pence and Michael Bourn before the trade deadline and have a lineup full of unrecognizable names. This bodes well for the Giants, who are also fielding their fair share of replacements.

If it wasn't bad enough already, to open the series against the struggling Astros both Pablo Sandoval and Orlando Cabrera are unavailable. Pablo's shoulder is bothering him to the point where he cannot swing right-handed against the left-handed Wandy Rodriguez. He's out tonight but should be back in the lineup tomorrow. Cabrera is nursing a strained groin, but he won't be missed as much as Sandoval: Pablo's been the team's best hitter for the whole season.

With all three players acquired at the trade deadline nursing injuries, the Giants are going to need a boost of some type in the near future. With Beltran still struggling to hit left-handed, his return from the DL may extend past Tuesday, which is the first day he's eligible to return. The franchise is hoping he'll be able to return shortly after Tuesday, but with wrist injuries it's always a wait-and-see type of deal. Just ask Mark DeRosa.

A funny Tweet I saw said that Pablo's shoulder injury could be attributed to carrying the offense for too long. False but humorous, this Giants team reminds me a lot of the 2009 Giants, where Pablo was the only productive hitter for most of the year and the team finished third in the NL West. This year's team is built for a strong playoff run, but with the amount of big injuries sustained since the loss of Buster Posey, making the playoffs is very much an open question. The Giants will have to look for more team production until they are completely healthy. It's unlikely that any individual player will be able to carry them.
